Product Review - HoMedics SC-540 Scale

!±8± Product Review - HoMedics SC-540 Scale

Recently I purchased the HoMedics SC-540 scale at a local sporting goods store. My motive behind this purchase was to find a way to check my body fat percentage accurately. But what I got was much more. This scale takes into account your level of hydration, and will let you know what that is, along with your percentage of body fat, muscle and bone.

I've got a hand held body fact monitor that works by sending a signal through your palms, but has been remarkably inaccurate. So from what I've read and discussed with health care professionals, the models that take into consideration your hydration level should be more accurate. That's why I thought this scale might be the right choice for me.

In addition to being more accurate, the display of your bodies hydration level along with the measurement of body fat percentage and muscle mass helps to allow you to track the changes in your body each week. This is important because if you notice that your hydration level has changed significantly from one measuring to the next then you can assume that your other stats may not be accurate, or at least should not be compared too strictly to previous readings. In this way I can feel confident that if my level of hydration is consistent, then I can trust that the other readings are accurate. That way I know if I'm dropping fat, or muscle and can react to those changes quickly. Obviously I want to increase my muscle mass and decrease my body fat percentage and this scale is a great tool in helping me with that goal.

I was super excited to start using this scale and really feel like it's been a good purchase. I've been able to see small fluctuations in my body fat from one week to the next and it's reassuring to see that number dropping while my weight stays the same. While I'm currently doing INSANITY, my intent is to push my body fat as low as possible by the end of the program, then I'll shift gears and probably go back into P90X with the purpose of putting on more muscle mass while maintaining my level of body fat. I think having this scale around is going to help quite a bit.

Treadmill Belt Replacement

!±8± Treadmill Belt Replacement

Just as everything wears out in time so does the treadmill belt. You can recognize that it is wearing out and needing replacement when it slows down when you step on it, if it's torn or if it's curled up on the edges. To be sure the belt needs replacement first check to see if the deck is alright. If it is, then it may only need lubrication or waxing. When the deck shows obvious wear such as grooves or shows other signs of wear than the deck and the belt needs replacement. If it is only the belt that needs replacement then check the owner's manual for instructions. Most of the belts have a generic set of instructions but the owner's manual will tell you the proper way to replace the belt for your particular system.

To replace the belt unplug the power cord to avoid electric shock. When you have unplugged the cord remove the cover or hood over the motor. Locate the screws that adjust the belt tension and push the roller towards the deck. Remove the front roller first and then remove the rear roller. If your treadmill has an incline and it is difficult to remove the rollers than plug it in just to move the incline and unplug it again. Remove the belt in one piece. Removing it in one piece will remind you how to install the new one. Locate the screws that hold the deck together. Remove them and remove the deck and the old belt. Now is the time to lubricate and wax the deck. Look at your new belt, there should be a seam that should be installed downward from left to right. A mark on the belt that shows what direction the belt should travel in is usually put there by the manufacturer. Slide the belt over the deck and put it back. Tighten the front roller first and then the rear roller. Be sure the belt fits snugly. If the treadmill runs smoothly try it out and if it stops while you are trying it then go back and readjust until everything fits smoothly and snugly.

2007 Best Buy Elliptical Trainers

!±8± 2007 Best Buy Elliptical Trainers

Fred Waters is the former V.P. of marketing for Smooth Fitness, and author of the Elliptical Review site. Each year he provides his recommendations for "Best Buy" elliptical trainers.

The "Best Buy" awards are based on a number of factors. We physically test the machines to determine overall quality and product performance. In addition, we consider customer feedback, third party reviews, company reputation and product warranty. In particular, it is important to look at the company reputation and the product warranty.

When you purchase an elliptical trainer, you are not just buying a machine, but also the company that stands behind it. Whether you have a question about the elliptical operation, or you need service, you want to purchase from a company that stands behind their equipment.

When selecting an elliptical trainer, you also want to consider the extent of the warranty. An elliptical trainer warranty can be very revealing. Obviously, limited warranties suggest a machine that is not built to last, while extensive warranties imply a quality built machine designed for vigorous use.

2007 "Best Buy" Recommendations:

Under ,000 - Spirit ZE110

Spirit Fitness ZE110 - I usually am reluctant to recommend any elliptical trainer under ,000. At this price range, you are buying a budget machine, built with budget components. There are certain aspects of the ZE110 I can criticize, but for the price, it is a reasonable value. If you are looking for an inexpensive elliptical trainer for moderate usage, this model is worth considering.

,000 - ,500

Smooth Fitness CE 3.2 - The one feature that immediately stands out on the Smooth CE 3.2 is the lifetime warranty. That generally is a clue about the quality of the machine. If the components cannot withstand rigorous use the company would go out of business replacing parts. The CE 3.2 is equipped with a heavy flywheel giving it a very smooth elliptical motion. Other features include an impressive console, a wide selection of challenging programs and wireless heart rate control. Smooth sells only direct and online, which results in a degree of savings to the consumer.

,500 - ,000

Sole Fitness E55 - Sole's marketing strategy is to build quality machines with quality components at reasonable prices, and the Sole E55 proves they are very successful with this value proposition. Besides the smooth and quiet elliptical motion, I really appreciated the 20" stride. The motion does not feel as confined as so many other treadmills under ,500. It comes with a 2-year service warranty. There is only one other manufacturer I am familiar with that offers similar coverage and their ellipticals start at over ,000. This machine is comparable to higher end models.

,000 - ,000

Life Fitness X3/X3i & Precor 5.17i - There are a number of excellent choices in this category, but the 2 companies that stand out are, Life Fitness and Precor. Since they both offer excellent products, we decided the "Best Buy" winner is a tie between the Life Fitness X3/X3i and the Precor EFX 5.17i. Both are quality machines that are very durable and extremely quiet. You can really tell the difference in their solid and stable performance. They are commercial quality at a residential price. It should be noted, the Precor EFX 5.17i offers only a lower body workout.

,000+

Precor EFX 5.23 - Most industry professionals agree the Precor EFX 5.23 is the top elliptical trainer in the market. Precor ellipticals are a favorite with top health clubs. The patented CrossRamp technology is their premium feature. It allows you to adjust the incline of the ramp as with a treadmill. By changing the incline, you can workout different muscles. It adds a whole new dimension to elliptical training. While testing a model at a fitness store, a woman walked by and said, "I own one and luv it." If money is no object, and you can live without the upper body workout, then the EFX 5.23 is an excellent choice.

Tunturi Exercise Bike Reviews

!±8± Tunturi Exercise Bike Reviews

Cycling is one of the most popular and useful workout regimens that a person can do, especially if he wants to lose weight and keep fit. This is also a good way to build resistance when training for an athletic meet or competition, since it is less stressful to the person's joints and muscles. Because of this, sales of exercise bikes have been on the rise. There are a lot of fitness equipment companies that are out there, Tunturi is one of them.

Tunturi is a Finnish bicycle and fitness equipment manufacturer whose history started way back in the year 1922. They are most popular in Europe but are gaining momentum is other countries as well. The company's main focus where doing bike repairs at first, and then they started adding some small-scale production and manufacturing Tunturi bicycles and stationary bicycles on a larger scale.

What sets the Tunturi exercise bikes apart from the other brands out in the market is that each machine has an innovative and ergonomic design that can be used for exercising and training while having optimum comfort. These exercise bikes also feature the exclusive and very user-friendly Tunturi monitor which provides you with many options and a wide array of functions. It has the Heart Rate Control (HRC) programs which can be used for an efficient, but especially safe, training.

There is also a chest strap that you can use for an accurate heart rate measurement which is included in the bike's accessories. Another great feature that is included is the 3.8" LCD T-Ride display console which can be used to be able track your workout time, speed, distance, heart rate, energy consumption and effort. The display console has a program which has profiles that are landscapes, where the slope angle of the machine affects the training intensity, just like it would if you were cycling outdoors.

A lot of print media outlets like magazines, ezines, newspapers and consumer ratings publications run tests on the best elliptical bikes or trainers, and you have access to these findings. Safety and comfort tests were also run. The one that scored the highest in both of these categories was the Cardiocross Proform 800. Second place went to the Stamina Conversion II. It was a close second.

The Tunturi C6 elliptical ranked tops for convenience and ease of use. They were also highly ranked for overall fetures and performance. The Vision Fitness X6200 HRTDA.

The Horizon Elliptical Trainer

!±8± The Horizon Elliptical Trainer

The Horizon Elliptical is an affordably priced elliptical that comes with a one year warranty. It is considered a good buy for the money. People who have used it say that the ride is comfortable because the pedals level on their own.

One of the problems with the Horizon Elliptical is that the brakes, which are mechanical, break down and really need to be periodically taken care of. The upper body workout, which you get with the handlebars in motion, can be difficult and uncomfortable for shorter people to reach and use.

The Horizon Elliptical doesn't seem to be built as well as other higher end type ellipticals and may require servicing often. This machine may not be a really long lasting piece of equipment, but it's still considered to be worth buying. Because of the problem with reaching the handlebars on the Horizon Elliptical, you should really test out a demo in the store to make sure that you can use it. If you decide to purchase a Horizon
Elliptical it would probably be a good idea to also purchase an extended warranty.

The Horizon Elliptical will feel different then the elliptical that you might use in a gym because the flywheel is on the reverse end of the machine.

The Horizon Elliptical has four different models. They are the Horizon e51, the Horizon e52, the Horizon e53, and the Horizon e54hr.The main differences in these models are the extras, like the heart rate monitors, which are part of the electronic system of the machine.
